God's Music: The Beat Of Salvation

Posted on May 24 2018

God is creative to the core. He speaks to me and countless others through the beauty of music.

I was the chief songwriter, lead singer, and rhythm guitar player for the alternative rock band Hot Rod Radio. Our home was The Live Music Capital Of The World, Austin, Texas.

Jody, Mike, Bill and myself met in Austin and we clicked musically. It was sex, drugs, and rock n roll for us...that’s what the scene was all about. We had fun.
We had been together approximately six months and had never talked about God or spirituality in any way.

On the evening of our first big show, we were in the green room only minutes before taking the stage. We were getting hyped for the show when out of nowhere Jody asked if I would pray for us. Wow! I was shocked! Didn’t see it coming. For me, there was no hesitation.

The four of us held hands in a circle as I began to pray. I don't recall word for word the entire prayer but I do remember starting off with “Dear Lord Jesus”. I remember at that moment wondering if they even knew who Jesus was. I also wondered what their concept of God was.

In this day and age, its common to have a general spirituality where God is only some idea. But Jesus is the Son of God...that I know. Thanks to my mother who raised me in the faith, I always had a yearning for God. Even in the dark confusion of worldly trappings where I separated myself from Him, I would pray; often.

So this night was no different. I was praying to the Living God! The only other words I remember praying that night were “love us in spite of our iniquities”. Let that sink in for a moment…

Fast forward two years to the month and I hit my knees, crying out to God that my spirit was so tired of the world and I needed Him.

Ever since that day, it’s been adventure beyond imagination! Total frontier. I was reminiscing with a friend just a few days ago about the band days in Austin. I told her that I still have energy, creativity, individualism, intense drive, love for life...but now it’s geared toward a walk of righteousness.

Do you find yourself alone and exhausted from the way you are living? Jesus beckons you to his presence. “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” (Revelation 3:20 NIV). Jesus also says, “Come to me, all you who are weary, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30 NIV).

I believe a lot of people are skeptical to surrender to something they cannot see. We all want proof of things, and that provides little foundation for faith. In our human understanding it’s difficult to wrap our brains around true faith. We have a desire to be in control of things.

I tell people that when you give your life to Christ, He accepts you just as you are. Shortly after, you realize you can be the individual He created you to be. I still love tattoos, have a rebellious spirit, am on fire for adventure and live fast. But I do it with reverence for God.

I no longer live a lifestyle that is harmful to me and others.
Hear the words of mine and others testimonies. You cannot contrive this intense love that we speak of.

Give your life to the Lord and walk with Him. It will blow you away having friendship with the creator of the universe!
